Abstract

This workshop aims to bring together medical experts active in the field of minimally invasive interventions, medical device manufacturers, experts in soft flexible and stretchable electronics and sensors, computer scientists and roboticists creating and studying soft and stiffness controllable robots. We will explore the synergies that will arise from robotic surgeons cooperating with such modern robots to conduct advanced surgical interventions previously not possible.

Day 3: Modelling, Learning and control of soft robots

Of significant interest are long and flexible continuum robots capable of navigating narrow passages while avoiding obstacles. The use of these robots in surgical domains is ground-breaking for both patients and surgeons. However, there are many open issues related to instrumentation, visualization and modelling, system integration, robust control for human-robot interaction, sensing and learning. Day 3 of the workshop focuses on these aspects.

The workshop will explore the advantages of these new robotic concepts and the challenges that lie ahead to create functional robot systems that can be employed in the operating theatre of the future. The workshop will feature academics and researchers from leading international institutions covering the latest developments on these topics.

Day 3 – Learning outcomes:

  1. To review the state of the art in modelling, learning and control of soft robots
  2. Knowledge on mathematical kinematic modelling of soft and continuum robots
  3. Application of deep learning and reinforcement learning to control soft robots.
  4. Understanding open challenges in learning and control of continuum robots.

We invite the submission of high-quality research posters, as part of the workshop. Submissions will be selected based on their relevance to the workshop, merit and novelty. Authors of accepted posters will also need to prepare a prerecorded 15 min presentation explaining their work that workshop attendees will be able to watch on their own time before or after the workshop. Videos will be available on the workshop website together with the posters.

A Best Poster Award of £300 will be awarded to the best submission.

We are exploring the possibility for a special issue on a top robotics and sensing journal, based on the workshop.
