Dr Sophia Bano is a senior research fellow at the at the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS), University College London, where she is associated with the Surgical Robot Vision group.
Her research focuses on devising computer vision and artificial intelligence techniques for surgical guidance and navigation in minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery videos. Her current research focuses on video mosaicking, semantic understanding, intraoperative image enhancement and surgical workflow analysis in minimally invasive surgeries.
Dr Bano received the Bachelor in Mechatronics Engineering and Master in Electrical Engineering degrees from National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan. Following this, she secured the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for the highly competitive MSc in Computer Vision and Robotics (VIBOT) programme run jointly by Heriot-Watt University (UK), University of Girona (Spain) and University of Burgundy (France). Following this, she received the joint PhD from Queen Mary University of London (UK) and Technical University of Catalonia (Spain), through the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship in 2016.
Before joining WEISS in 2018, Dr Bano worked as a Postdoctoral researcher at University of Dundee. She has also contributed to several projects including Wellcome/EPSRC Guided Instrumentation for Fetal Therapy and Surgery (GIFT-Surg) at University College London, EPSRC Augmenting Communication using Environmental data to drive Language Prediction (ACE-LP) at University of Dundee (UK) and ERC Soft Tissue Intervention Neurosurgical Guide (STING) at Imperial College London (UK).
Dr Bano is an active member of the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) society where, since 2021, she is serving as an area chair and co-organisers for Affordable healthcare and AI for Resource diverse global health (MICCAI-FAIR) workshop, Endoscopic Vision (MICCAI-EndoVis) challenge and Women in MICCAI Inspirational Leader Legacy (WiM-WILL). She is also an area chair for International Conference on Information Processing in Computer Assisted Interventions (IPCAI 2022) and has been serving as a reviewer for Transactions of Medical Imaging (TMI), Medical Image Analysis (MedIA), International Journal for Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (IJCARS), and Robotics and Automation Letters (RAL).
