Andreas Melzer is Professor of Computer assisted Surgery and Founding Director of ICCAS Institute  for Computer Assisted Surgery, Medical Faculty, University Leipzig, Germany.

He is a leading authority on medical technology and related clinical procedure in the field of image guidance. His work has covered the invention of novel instruments for minimal access surgery and the development of devices and clinical procedures for interventional MRI.

He has worked internationally as an enthusiastic ambassador and educator in the field of medical technology, training PhD students from diverse physics, engineering and clinical science specialties. Prof. Dr. Andreas Melzer is the current Executive Director of the Innovation Center Computer Assisted Surgery (ICCAS) in Leipzig, Germany, and the Division Leader of the research team on Computer Assisted Image-Guided Interventions within the organization.

Andreas Melzer can look back at more than 200 patents and over 300 peer-reviewed publications in the field. He is also the co-founder and partner of six start-up companies and a consultant to many major vendors in the medical technology business. Prof. Melzer’s academic career spans four continents, where his latest appointment is as a Visiting Professor at the National Cancer Center Graduate School of Cancer Science and Policy in Seoul, South Korea.

He has been elected a board member of many reputable German and International societies in the medical technology field, among them the German Society for Biomedical Engineering (BMT) and the International Society for Medical Innovation and Technology (iSMIT). His long standing excellence and valuable contributions to medicine have earned him a Fellowship of the British Academy of Medical Sciences in 2019.
